Depot Packages

Packages

Depot Packages gives your team a place to publish private packages and install dependencies through Depot with your existing package managers.

Start with the quickstart to install a package. To publish your own packages, create a Private repository, or use a Virtual repository with publishing enabled.

Choose where packages come from

Each repository belongs to your organization and contains one package format. Choose a repository based on what you need:

Repository typeUse it toPublishing
PrivateStore packages your team publishesYes
CacheFetch dependencies from an upstream registry and reuse cached downloadsNo
VirtualInstall private packages and upstream dependencies through one endpointWhen publishing to a Private source is enabled

In Packages, Private repositories lists Private and Virtual repositories. Cache repositories lists your custom caches and built-in caches for known upstreams, such as npm and PyPI. These tabs organize repositories by purpose. All package requests require authentication, including requests to built-in caches.

Built-in caches are available without creating a repository. Depot creates them when you first use or list them. You must still configure your package manager to use Depot. Administrators can change their cache settings and policies, but can't change their upstream URLs or delete them.

A Virtual repository combines other repositories as Sources. To publish through it, select a Private source in Publish packages to under Settings, Sources and publishing. Published packages are stored in that source repository.

Share a repository with your team

Use your personal Depot login for local development. Your organization role determines what you can do. Members can install and publish; readers can install. Creating repositories and changing their configuration requires owner or administrator access. Every member can use repository setup instructions.

For automation, use an existing Depot job or runner token when available. See authentication and CI before adding credentials to a workflow.

To combine private and upstream packages, control dependency policies, or manage retention, see manage repositories.
