Run Amp in Depot sandboxes

Run Amp threads on self-hosted orbs in Depot sandboxes. Depot is the orb provider, so it starts, pauses, and deletes each orb for you. View run status, timing, and failure details in your Depot dashboard.

How it works

Amp runs the agent loop and model inference on its own servers. The orb runs the agent's tools: it reads and edits files and runs commands. With self-hosted orbs, an orb provider you choose supplies the machine for each orb.

Depot is that provider. It connects out to Amp with your provider token and waits for jobs, the same way amp orb provider does, so Amp never connects into Depot and gets no Depot credentials. When a thread starts on the provider, Amp sends a spawn job. Depot starts a sandbox with the connection's run settings, and Amp clones your repository, runs your project's .agents/setup, and starts the agent in it.

When the thread goes idle, Amp sends a pause job. Depot saves a snapshot of the orb and stops the sandbox. The next message in the thread sends spawn again, and Depot restores the snapshot. When the thread is deleted, Amp sends a delete job, and Depot removes the orb and its snapshots.

How Amp runs on DepotStart a thread in Amp with your Depot provider selected. Amp's servers run the agent loop and send an orb job for the thread. Depot, connected to Amp as the orb provider, claims the job and starts an orb in a sandbox. The orb receives tool calls from Amp, executes commands and file operations, and sends results back. Get started

Prerequisites

Before you start, you need:

  • A Depot account with the Owner role in your Depot organization.
  • An Amp workspace with self-hosted orbs on. They're on by default, and a workspace administrator can turn them off under Settings > Orbs in Amp.

Create an orb provider in Amp

  1. In Amp, open Settings > Orbs for your workspace and click Add Orb Provider.
  2. Give the provider a name, such as depot-orbs. Members pick the provider by this name when they start a thread.
  3. Copy the token. It starts with aop_live_, and Amp shows it once.

Give the token to Depot only. Amp expects exactly one orb provider per token, and a second one running with the same token would claim some of your threads' orbs for itself.

Connect Amp to Depot

  1. Open Settings > Connections > Agent providers in Depot and select Amp.
  2. Paste the token into Orb provider token.
  3. Click Connect.

When the connection succeeds, Depot shows Connected to Amp. Depot stores the token encrypted and shows only its last four characters from then on. Orbs never see it: each one boots with a token Amp issues for that orb alone.

Choose a sandbox size

Orbs start in 4x16 sandboxes (4 CPUs, 16 GB memory). To change that, open the connection's Run settings in Settings > Managed Runs and pick a sandbox size. Every orb on the connection gets the same size, because Depot doesn't read Amp's orb types. The same settings switch the connection between x86-64 and ARM64 sandboxes.

Orbs get a Depot API token that can start and cancel CI runs as well as read them. To limit it to reads, set Depot API token role to Read-only under Depot access on the connection page. Running orbs pick that change up too. Turn off Depot Cache in the same place if orbs should start without cache credentials.

Start a thread

  1. In Amp, open a new thread and click Orb.
  2. Open the type dropdown and choose your provider under Self-Hosted.
  3. Send your first message.

Amp asks Depot for an orb, clones your repository into it, runs your project's .agents/setup, and starts the agent. To make the provider the default for new threads, select it in Amp's workspace settings.

From the Amp CLI, pass the name you gave the provider in Amp, not your Depot connection's name:

amp -ox "your first message" --orb-provider depot-orbs

Verify your run in Depot

Open Managed Runs in your Depot dashboard and filter by Amp to see your runs, newest first. Each orb Depot starts is one run, and the run ends when Amp pauses the orb.

Select a run to see its status, duration, and steps, each with its own log. The setup script step shows the script's output, and if the run failed, a banner shows the reason.

The Agent panel shows the sandbox ID, and the Outputs panel lists the files the run saved for download.

Organization owners can stop a run from its page. Depot snapshots the orb before it stops the sandbox, so the thread's next message gets the orb's files back.

What's next

Give Amp a repository task, such as fixing a bug, adding tests, or updating a dependency, in a thread on your Depot provider. You can close your laptop while Amp works on Depot, then return to the thread to review progress and give follow-up instructions.

Continue working by sending another message in the same Amp thread. Amp wakes the orb, and Depot restores its latest snapshot, which keeps the orb's files but not its running processes.
